One of the presidential aspirants in the forthcoming national elections in Nigeria, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili has noted that for the country to move forward, it must disconnect itself from the old brigade and embrace emerging technologies like Blockchain, AI and IoT.
Ezekwesili who emerged as the presidential flag bearer of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) said this in a national television program sunrise daily. This was in response to the question whether her party can boast of the kind of political structure to match the nation’s two biggest political parties, All Progressive Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The aspirant expressed confidence in her party’s capabilities to revive the interest of over 70% of eligible voters who have over the years shown no interest in participating in electoral processes. This is the population that she believes are tired of the older class of politicians of which the two frontline aspirants represent.
Ezekwesili is popular for the activist roles she has played within the country in demanding more responsibility from both the previous government and the present towards the expected release of the kidnapped Chibok girls by the terrorist group Boko Haram.
Having served under former President Olusegun Obasanjo in several capacities, Ezekwesili earned herself the sobriquet of “Madam Due Process”. Other appointments included two ministerial positions first as the federal minister of solid minerals, and subsequently as federal the minister of education.
The changes that Ezekwesili introduced into the Nigerian government systems in her various capacities earns her the reputation of a woman who isn’t shy of disruption. Hence, her opinion about the need to embracing emerging technologies towards national development can be taken seriously.
The Nigerian political ecosystem is complicated and history favours the aspirants of the two largest political parties in the nation. Therefore, before introducing disrupting technologies into national development, Ezekwesili must first disrupt the status quo in the Nigerian political system.
